Biography
Florence began the viola at Wiltshire’s Super Strings Club and went on to study with Patricia Noall at Wells Cathedral School, one of the UK’s four specialist music schools, from the age of seven. She was awarded Specialist Musician status at ten and played principal viola in every orchestra at the school. She was highly commended in the school’s Concerto Competition and won the Yfrah Neaman String Prize.
At nine she gave a solo performance at the Royal College of Music as a Leverhulme Scholar of the National Children’s Orchestra, and she was twice a Leverhulme Scholar. At eleven she played the viola solo in Vaughan Williams’ Norfolk Rhapsody with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, where she was principal viola. At thirteen she won a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Over the next three years she played in the UK’s leading concert halls under some of the world’s most distinguished conductors, and in 2012 she represented the orchestra in a joint performance of Goebbels’ Surrogate Cities with the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra at the Southbank.
She has appeared as a soloist with Wessex Strings and at the Grove Park Music Festival in London. She played in the Trinity Laban String Chamber Orchestra at the 2011 Greenwich International Music Festival, and toured Germany three times with the Wells Virtuosi.
Florence studied classical viola with Professor Mark Knight at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on a scholarship, graduating with a BMus. Her final exam and dissertation were both graded first class.
